Symphony #1

String Orchestra & Synthesized Sound
Commissioned by William Starr
20 minutes | 1979
Score 35 pages

This three-movement symphony is scored for strings only, the wind and percussion parts being replaced by a synthesized pre-recorded accompaniment. The greatest challenges result from synchronization issues and dynamic balances. The first of these is addressed by the metric organization and an abundance of aural cues. At times, a solo quartet is highlighted, where the writing is more virtuosic and the synchronization more difficult. The second and third movements end with glissandi providing the main musical texture. Many of the accompanying sounds seem to emanate from afar, and the musical progression unfolds at a dreamy pace.
