Anxious Arrivals

String Bass & Synthesized Sound
11 minutes | 1977
Score 9 pages

This work from the composer’s youth uses several methods of producing sound from the solo bass: bowed, pizzicato, snap pizzicato, and knuckles on the body of the instrument. It also features subtle glissandi resulting from pulling on the strings while bowing, producing a change in tension and consequently pitch. A dry, tense atmosphere is characteristic, marked by rhythmic episodes and abrupt crescendos. Synchronization is accomplished by aural cues, and the bass imitates the accompaniment on occasion.
