This is a song cycle dealing with a young woman’s marriage and coming of age. The title refers to the bride’s use of three gestures to keep herself aloof from involvement: the wave, the handshake, and the embrace. There are shifts of mood and tempo reflecting her insecurity and conflicting emotions about her upcoming wedding. In spite of the many ups and downs, though, the music builds higher and higher until it ends with a very powerful expression of joy and acceptance.
