This work is in a single movement. The somewhat whimsical and tender theme stated early in the piece gradually becomes more celebratory and ornamented in successive transformations building towards an intense and virtuosic finale. Written in 1992 to celebrate the eighth anniversary of the composerís marriage to his pianist-wife, the title reflects two rings touching in the center to form the number eight. The piece was extensively revised in 1996, relaxing the somewhat excessive demands made upon the player. Subsequent to the composerís divorce, he refers to this piece as his "Fantasy-Etude".
